An Elegant Intimate Wedding at Ocean House in Westerly, Rhode Island
Perched high above the Atlantic on the bluffs of Watch Hill, Ocean House is often synonymous with grand, glamorous celebrations—most recently, it made headlines for hosting Olivia Culpo’s wedding. But this iconic Relais & Châteaux property is just as magical for smaller gatherings, offering a unique blend of five-star luxury and warm intimacy.
Recently, I had the joy of photographing Nate and Diana, a couple who traveled all the way from California to be married here with an intimate group of their Rhode Island family. Their day was a perfect example of how Ocean House’s world-class setting can transform even the smallest celebration into something unforgettable.
Ceremony & Coastal Beauty
Nate and Diana exchanged vows on the South Lawn, a lush green expanse overlooking the sparkling Atlantic. The salty breeze, the soft sound of waves, and the golden glow of a late-summer afternoon created a naturally romantic scene that needed almost no embellishment, though the florals by Fig & Squill were breathtaking. I love a bouquet that doesnt have an exact shape with loose tendrils, especially for an oceanside wedding.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed an outdoor cocktail hour on the lawn while we slipped away to the private white sand beach for portraits. With the tide low and the horizon painted in soft blues and golds, it was the perfect spot for quiet, joy-filled moments before the festivities continued.
An Art-Filled Reception
The reception took place in a private ground-floor dining room with panoramic ocean views. The space is a hidden gem, its walls adorned with original works by Ludwig Bemelmans—the beloved author and illustrator of Madeline. One of the most delightful surprises is a preserved piece of wall from his Paris café, hand-painted with portraits of his regular customers.
As the sun dipped toward the water, guests enjoyed what can only be described as a dinner to remember—course after course of beautifully plated dishes showcasing the best of New England’s seasonal cuisine. Between bites, there were heartfelt, tearful toasts that brought the entire room together in laughter, joy, and love.
